LITERATURE 8

Sunday, March 26, 2006

Are you ready to start blogging about literature? Your posts this week can be about the following:

**The nonfiction test on Tuesday...Do you have last minute questions or concerns? Do you want to know if you are using vocabulary correctly or have the right definitions for words? Or maybe you just want to comment on the three pieces of nonfiction that were read in class. Which piece did you enjoy the most? What did you learn from these pieces?

**We are going to start writing our own pieces of nonfiction this week. Want to share ideas or do some writing and share with classmates?

**Do you have nonfiction titles to recommend for reading?

TEST TOMORROW.

what are the best ways to study?!

First off, did you bring your literature book home? One of the ways to study is to reread the selections. Can you explain what you have read to someone--anyone? How much time do you spend studying? Answer the questions on the review sheet. When studying vocabulary, try writing down the definitions on a piece of paper. Hope this helps!

Some questions on the review sheet were answered in class--but not all. Which questions are you having trouble with?

"THE STREET"

How did the author's unusual description of hunger affect you?

i didn't understand this one.

The boy's victory on the street is symbolic. What does the line suggest about his future?

i put that he will now learn how to denfend himself against other people.

ashh,

Richard Wright uses personification to illustrate how painful his hunger is—as if hunger is a real presence that can cause terrifying pain. When reading the beginning about hunger, did you feel that hunger was a real presence? The answer to this question can be included in how the unusual description of hunger affected you.

The victory on the streets is the foundation for which Richard will make his place in this world—how he will grow up and what type of person he will be.

hey alex-
Um a Catch-22 is a loose- loose situation! and in the street Riches catch-22 is when he gets beat at home and beat in the street. So no matter where he goes he will loose! (hense- loose-loose-situation) The author of the street is Richard Wright! I'm pretty sure! hopes this helps!

First off, Jamie, I am so glad that you corrected loose to lose! Also, I like that you are helping Alex--this is what I want this blog to do--be a resourceful for students.

Alex,

Richard Wright is the author of "The Street." A Catch-22 is a no-win situation; all choices have consequences. Jamie's example is correct. Also, you will like what we are doing for the rest of the week--getting into the nonfiction writing assignment.

Jamie,

Ok--I have my English hat on...a reflexive sentence is the following:Jamie taught herself to play the piano. The pronoun (herself) reflects back to the noun (Jamie) used earlier in the sentence--this pronoun indicates that the same person or thing is involved.
The intensive sentence is the following: I myself would rather go to school and learn. The intensive pronoun (myself) adds emphasis to another noun or pronoun. If you take out the intensive pronoun, the meaning of the sentence will stay the same.

Hope this helps. Grammar is so much fun!!

Mrs. Fox,

I went to study for the test and I couldn't really understand MLK's speech. I was wondering if you could help me with the questions on the study guide for the test. I mainly have trouble with what his dream was because he had many and his definition of freedom.

Thank you,

Kelsey S.

Sorry, i mean MISS Fox.

5:37 PM
Blogger Miss Fox said...

Kelsey,

MLK did mention more than one dream--you should mention a few of them, such as equality for everyone, freedom to live a life where people are represented by their character, gaining equality and freedom through nonviolence...as far as the definition of freedom...based on everything that MLK has stated, what is freedom to him--what words would he use to describe freedom. I hope I am helping. I don't want to give too much information about the definition of freedom. I want to see what you think. Good luck.

Hey Guys I wnated to comment on the Assmebly yesterday!

I really liked it. I am in the 5/6 period and if you were in there you saw how passionate I was about it. As I believe many times in a teens life they must face diffifult situations. I think that people who really, truly understood the assembly have been through something in their lives. I pesonally have. I'm not saying that if you have never had something happen to you in your life then you didnt get it- im saying most peple who did not understand it have never been through something in their life. It is very hard to get something as passionate and influencial as that if you don't know what heartbreak is. So my tip to everyone who did not understand it or laughed it off or joked about it is that you should put everything he said to us yesterday in the back of your head and maybe, it will really help you when the time is right. Never forget what he said because I believe taht he might have said some of the most important things you will ever hear!

Jamie, you're very right. He made alot of people turn around and think twice.

I think both Jamie and Alexis make a fine point that hopefully the assembly made people--at least--start thinking about their life, the way they view themselves and others, and take a path toward the light--the positive contribution to life. Thanks girls for beginning the conversation about the assembly...hopefully more people will write.
