Writing Nonfiction
Nonfiction is discovering the world through real events, people, and experiences--this genre is not invented but reveals what is true and factual. Can you help out with possible ideas for writing. Some ideas could include a trip to the beach or in the woods...a time that changed your life...a time you made an important decision...a time when something extremely funny happened...what else can be added to this list? You are going to write an autobiography so ideas are needed!

heyy,
Another idea could be about something that changed you dramatically that you never thought would happen.
Ms. Fox
Could we write a story about what happenend on a vacation to like the beach or a place such as the Outer Banks (OBX) or Flordia. How long does it have to be again.
Alex
um... Ms. Fox are we going to be doing most of the writing at home or in class?
Alexis,
I think your idea about an event that changes someone dramatically is great. Also, we are going to be writing tomorrow and possibly Friday of this week.
Alex,
Your idea about the vacation is also a great idea. You are writing 250-500 words.
I will see you tomorrow and we will write, write, and write!!!

HEYYY MISS FOX! =]
I like this nonfiction stuff.
(hehehe)
I really cannot wait until we get into drama but especially poetry!
I wrote many "songs" and peoms I guess you could say previously just on my own. Hopefully we can send them in for publication.
Poems do not have to rhyme, correct? Beucase I just wrote one the other night that uses metaphores about thunderstorms, and hurricanes, and just natural "disasters".
Can't Wait!

I am elated that you are happy about writing the nonfiction piece. Nonfiction is a wonderful genre to explore. Alex, you are right when you mention that you never thought about all of the things that have happened to you. It is amazing!! As for you Brookie--I am sure that both drama and poetry will be a super way to end the year. Can't wait to read some pieces you have already written.

Hey- Info on Anne Frank- Extra Credit-
Born on June 12, 1929, Anne Frank was a German-Jewish teenager who was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust. She and her family, along with four others, spent 25 months during World War II in an annex of rooms above her father’s office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After being betrayed to the Nazis, Anne, her family, and the others living with them were arrested and deported to Nazi concentration camps. In March of 1945, nine months after she was arrested, Anne Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen. She was fifteen years old. Her diary, saved during the war by one of the family’s helpers, Miep Gies, was first published in 1947. Today, her diary has been translated into 67 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.

Ms. Fox,
I would like to know what you think of my autobiography. Do you think I need and changes or additions? I would also like help spliting my story into paragraphs.
The dark hair on my right arm is a constant reminder of that one dusk evening in October 2005. I was doing what I loved to do-play hockey. I had played with my friends since 3rd grade. After 4 ½ years of skating I was pretty good. Of course I had fallen before but never gotten seriously injured. That day, however, was like a wake up call at 5:30 am on a Saturday for me. Here is what I have so far.
It was about 10 of 5 and the 4 o’clock bus had just passed my street. One kid had gotten off and I am very thankful that that one kid had basketball practice that one day. I was talking to my neighbor Drew who was walking home from the bus. Skating backwards and not paying attention to the berries that had fallen off our Bradford Pear trees. All of a sudden, one of the berries laying in the just so happy to get caught between two of my wheels. My wheels instantly stopped sending me flying though the air like someone who had just been thrown by the biggest bully in the school. As a natural instinct of a human, I put my hand down to break my fall-that turned out to be the worst decision of the day. The next thing I remember is sitting up and taking my hockey glove off. I was sitting with my legs out in front of me with my glove laying between my legs. I braced my arm on the glove and starred with a what-just-happened look on my face. I yelled at the top of my lungs to my neighbor who was just about to my drive way. I had to tell this kid five times to get my mom. She came down and the first thing out of her mouth was, “Yep. That‘s broken. Do you think we can get you up to the car to get you to the hospital?” She was immediately bombarded with no’s. it took the ambulance twenty minutes to get to my house. In the ambulance on my way to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, all I could think about was the Flyers game on that night. My mom assured me that I wasn’t going to see it. It turned out that my arm was broken worse then we all thought. It was at a 60 degree angle. I was told that if it was broken another five degrees that my bone would have been popping out of my skin. It would have been a bloody gory mess but luckily God was with me enough that day that it was clean. I was thirteen weeks until I played hockey again and the first thing I did was skate backwards over the exact same spot I fell. I didn’t know a berry could do so much harm.
Evan,
Why the dark hair on your arm? What on your arm reminds you of your accident? Instead of describing your 4 1/2 years of play as just good--how else could you describe your abilities playing hockey? The line--"here is what I have so far"--you should take out. Use 4:50 instead of ten of five. I love the bully line--I was a bit confused by the line about the boy who gets off the bus. What about adding some dialogue when you are yelling? What was going on while waiting for the ambulance? I also love the ending. We will discuss paragraphing in class--so bring a copy of your paper. Hope these questions and comments help.
Jamie,
Thanks for starting the information on Anne Frank. I will share your entry in class tomorrow.

Anne Frank- Extra Credit-
The Diary
On June 12, 1942, Anne Frank's parents gave her a small red-and-white plaid diary for her thirteenth birthday. Anne recorded her innermost feelings in her diary, which she named "Kitty." Less than a month after receiving her diary, on July 6, 1942, Anne and her family were forced to go into hiding. Though they could bring very few things with them to the hiding place, Anne brought her diary. During the months Anne lived in hiding, her diary became her best friend and confidant
The Publication of the Diary:
Otto Frank was impressed with his daughter's diary, and typed up the manuscript for various friends and family members to read. Eventually Otto decided to publish the diary so that readers would learn about the effects of Nazi fascism and its process of dehumanization. However, in the immediate aftermath of the war it was not easy for Otto to find a publisher for Anne's work. He was told that no one wanted to read about the Holocaust. Finally, a newspaper called Het Parool printed a story about Anne's diary that captured the interest of Contact Publishers, a Dutch firm. They wanted to publish it.
I have like a page of info on her that I found on Google.com
i will print it out for class tommorow.
Alex
Ms. Fox
What happens if your story is over the word limmit.
By 600 words!
im not planning to send it anywhere.
Kaitlyn,
Yes--bring your paper for me to read. I am glad you like this blog thing!
Alex,
Thank you for posting more information about Anne Frank. Also, try to cut down your paper...have you given your piece to anyone to read? It doesn't have to be exactly 500 words--let's see what can be condensed or shortened!
Ms. Fox,
I remember you mentioning before about the movie Paper Clips. Well I saw it, it was very good and moving.
What did i miss in class today?
Thank you
Alex
Miss Fox,
I realized i forgot to get my paper from you. I sure I would have time to do it during homeroom, or if there weren't that many errors I will have my sister read over it to find them and print it out tonight. Let me know what I should do!
Thanks you!
Kelsey S.
Ms. Fox
I relized i forgot my paper also.
If you wouldnt mind would you comment under my blog your comments please. Thank you so much.
Alex
Kelsey,
I was trying to find you after school today. I think the only comments I made were about verb tense and just to read all sentences over again for grammar errors. You seem to be switching your verb tense. I think allowing your sister to read it will be fine.
Alex,
I did not get to read your paper yet--I had so many to read in so little time today. The other problem is I did not bring your paper home with me. If you still want to post parts of your paper for me to read or the areas you are concerned about--please do so.
I have a lot of homework tonihgt from being out yesterday - its ok - you dont have to comment on my paper. Thanks anyway
hey Ms.Fox,
Will there be any drama lit terms on the quiz tomorrow? If so, is it all of them because you said there's only going to be 15 quesions.
Alex,
There will be five drama terms on the quiz, five vocabulary words on the quiz, and five questions about Anne's diary excerpts. Sorry about the paper--I am sure that it is a solid piece of work.
Hey M. Fox...
I was wondering if it's okay that my nonfiction paper is 705 words. I don't think I can take anything out though...
Shelby (S)
Shelby (S),
Your word limit is fine.
